Getting your priorities (and finances) straight in 2012.

So we’re nearly two months into 2012. How’re we doing? If you’re like me, you’re knee-deep in tax land right about now. A perfect time to get a really good look at your finances. Do they align with your priorities?
Think about what you have, what you want and what you really need. This can vary greatly person to person. It is easy to confuse what you need and what you want. When it boils down to it all we really need is to provide basics (food, clothing and shelter) to our families in a safe environment and (fate willing) live out healthy, happy lives.

Freeze Yer Buns Challenge 2011

So this year we joined in the Freeze Yer Buns Challenge over at The Crunchy Chicken. The challenge is to lower your thermostat to save money and energy. It turned out to be an unusual sort of challenge since the winter was so mild this year (famous last words).

When you’re lowering your thermostat there is a fine line between saving money and comfort. Everyone’s threshold is different. For us, 55 degrees overnight made sense down from 62, and we attempted 65 degrees during the day down from 68. Admittedly, the 65 degrees ended up being too low, and we inevitably bumped it up to 70.
